Google Chromecast Gets An iOS App

Chromecast
Google introduced a new free Chromecast app for iOS on Tuesday that lets you find, set up and manage Chromecast settings from iOS.

This functionality was already available in a web browser but the custom application makes it simpler to work with Google’s $35 streaming device. You’ll need to be running iOS 5.1 or better to install and use this software.

The $35 HDMI dongle plugs into any HDTV to let you watch online videos.

The iOSapp will allow users to manage the settings and set up the Chromecast through an iOS device. The app scans for Chromecasts you've previously set up on your Wi-Fi network and makes it easy to set up new ones. To download the app now, click here.

The dongle already supports Vimeo, Redbox Instant, Netflix and YouTube and compatibility with HBO Go and Hulu Plus in rumored to be coming in the near future.

On Monday, the developer of an app called AllCast, took to Google+ to complain Google had blocked his app. AllCast allowed users to stream most photos and videos to the Chromecast, even those not on Google approved media whitelist:

I'd strongly suggest holding off on buying a Chromecast until we can see how Google chooses to move forward on third party applications. There are also other (open) platforms and stacks that one could buy/support as well. (LeapCast, NodeCast, etc)
