Report: Google Building Android Game Console

The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that Google is developing a videogame console powered by its Android operating system. While the web search giant refused to comment on the story, it is known to be exploring ways to counter a videogame console that is expected to be part of the next Apple TV product release.

Google is also apparently watching the success of the fledgling Ouya Inc., which this week began selling a $99 Android-based console and game controller. That product has garnered rave reviews in the trade press and has already sold out its first run in several of the retailers who signed onto the intial roll-out. Ouya is also reported to be close to signing a deal with big-box retailer Target, a deal which move the units into hundreds of stores.

Last year Google introduced the home-entertainment device Nexus Q, but the first-ever consumer device designed and marketed by the company was canceled before it was sold to the public. A new version is expected to be introduced later this year for a price much less than the $299 Nexus Q list price.
