Today's Song You Should Know: Fleetwood Mac - 'Rhiannon' (Live)

On the face of it, it might seem silly to argue that Fleetwood Mac's "Rhiannon" needs any more attention. Since it was released in 1976, it was been one of the best-known songs from a band who released two of classic rocks most iconic albums.

And yet, even if you've heard "Rhiannon" a million times (and you probably have), you'll be blown away by this live version of the song. I'm not sure where the video was recorded, it seems to be from the period around the time of the song's release as part of "Fleetwood Mac" album. But it's a pretty good reflection of how the song's live performance was radically different from the familiar slick California Rock production by Keith Olsen. While the recorded version is a sleak 3:46 track with not a wasted moment, this live version clocks in at almost seven minutes. There are some unfamiliar lyrics and this brooding, charismatic performance by Stevie Nicks that is captivating. Mick Fleetwood said in a "Behind The Music" interview that ""her Rhiannon in those days was like an exorcism" and that's a pretty accurate description here. She's a force of nature in this song and the band provides just the right level of support. I'm not sure that I prefer this version of "Rhiannon," but I would put the live version on the same level as the more familiar single release.
