Soccer Mainstay fuboTV Unveils New OTT Entertainment Streaming Service

The past year has brought a number of new options for TV viewers either looking to cut the cord or simply find an alternative to the over-the-air broadcast signal life. While Sling, DirecTV Now and Playstation Vue have been getting most of the attention, there are some new places to consider when looking for that prefect over-the-top TV experience.

If you're familiar with fuboTV at all, it's likely because they hve been the best place to stream soccer from around the world. fuboTV has contracts to stream La Liga, Serie A, Liga MX, and MLS games and a deal with beIN Sports also gave them access to other Ligue 1, Serie A, and FIFA World Cup qualifiers games.

But beginning in early February, fuboTV also added a number of traditional entertainment channels and it now offers a lineup that can compete with the smaller tier packages of traditional OTT options such as Sling or Playstation Vue.

The base fubo Premier tier currently costs $34.99 (although that's listed as a "30% savings" over the normal costs of $49.99). The lineup is heavy on sports, but it also includes Fox and NBC cable channels, presumably included as part of fubo's deal for the Fox and NBC-owned sports channels. You'll also find A&E cable channels - A&E, History, Lifetime, LMN, fyi - as well as Crown Media's Hallmark and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries channels. But you won't find anything from Turner (TNT, TBS, Cartoon, CNN) Discovery Communications (Discovery, TLC, ID, OWN, etc.) or Scripps Networks (Food, Cooking, HGTV, DIY).

fubo also offers a number of other optional programming tiers. fubo Latino includes 13 Spanish language networks for $14.99 a month (see the lineup below); fubo Português includes six Portuguese-language sports channels for $19.99 a month. Click here to see their other programming options.

Given those holes in the lineup, fubo TV remains a better choice for sports fans than those who are looking for robust entertainment offerings. And given the $34.99 pricepoint, I'm not convinced it's a good enough deal to recommend anyone switching over from a rival OTT service. But it's still worth keeping an eye on and it's a reminder that the OTT service market is evolving quickly.

We'll be posting a deeper review of the service on Thursday.
