Most PBS, PBS Kids Shows Set To Expire From Netflix On July 1

Martha Speaks

Unless viewers get a last-minute reprieve, nearly all PBS and PBS programming is set to disappear from the U.S. version of Netflix on July 1, 2014.

A year ago, Netflix extended a deal with PBS that gave it non-exclusive streaming rights for a number of children's titles and documentary programs. It also got exclusive streaming rights to the children's preschool program "Super Why" and the British murder mystery "The Bletchley Circle."

But that multi-year deal is apparently at an end, and as of now nearly all PBS programs is scheduled to expire from Netflix on July 1.

So why aren't the two sides extending the deal? A source at PBS says the expirations are part of an "ongoing realignment in our streaming strategy." The source also expects that at least some of the programs (if not these specific episodes) may continue to be available at some point on Netflix.

But there are likely a couple of factors at play here. At about the same time last year that Netflix extended its streaming deal with PBS, the channel also signed a new multi-year deal with Amazon. Some of these shows will apparently head there as an ongoing part of that deal.

PBS also recently announced plans to offer a streaming service of complete past seasons of programs that would be available only to viewers who donate to their local public television station. While the parameters of that deal are still being worked out internally at PBS, it's likely some of these programs will end up primarily available through that service.

Here are some of what is scheduled to disappear. For a complete list of titles expiring from Netflix, click here.
