Kobe Bryant's short film "Dear Basketball" has earned the free streaming service Go90 its first Academy Award nomination. The five-minute film is one of five contenders in the Animated Short Film category, which in recent years has often featured work distributed on the internet.
"Dear Basketball" is adapted from a poem Bryant wrote when he retired from basketball in November 2015. Earlier this year, the poem was turned into a striking, hand-drawn film by Believe Entertainment.
"This is beyond the realm of imagination," said Bryant in a press release. "It means so much that The Academy deemed Dear Basketball worthy of contention. Thanks to the genius of Glen Keane Productions and John Williams for taking my poem to this level. It’s an honor to be on this team."
