CEO: Hulu Will Generate $1B In 2013 Revenue

Hulu
New Hulu CEO Mike Hopkins wrote on Wednesday that he expects the streaming video company will generate $1 billion in revenue for 2013, up from $695 million in 2012.

In a post released on the official Hulu blog, Hopkins, a former Fox Networks executive, wrote that "When you think about the fact that Hulu first launched out of beta in 2008, it's quite an impressive feat to scale the business from zero to $1 billion over the course of just six years."

Hopkins also said that Hulu hit the 5 million mark for subscribers to its Hulu Plus premium service earlier this year, and that about half of those Hulu Plus customers stream TV shows "exclusively" on mobile devices.

Hulu offered twenty originals programs in 2012 and Hopkins said Hulu plans to increase the amount of original programming and acquired series that it offers subscribers in 2014. He also touted the fact that Hulu provides current episodes of hit shows from five of the six top networks and seven of the top ten primetime TV shows are available on the service.

Left unsaid was any hint on the future of the service, which continues to be the subject of rumors it may be sold or that Hulu's media partners may alter the viewing windows of their primetime shows.
