Synopsis: Welcome To New York stars actor/comedian Jim
Gaffigan as an Indiana weatherman of the same name, who is called up
to the "big time" and finds himself trying to hold his own on the Big
Apple's "AM New York" newscast.
Jim's folksy world of tornadoes and silos is now a combative world
of five dollar cups of coffee and power wardrobes. Jim has to contend
with a big-city move and a big-city job, and especially with his colleagues
at the morning news show.
Co-anchor Adrian Spencer (Rocky Carroll) sees Jim as a threat and will
do whatever it takes to ensure that he doesn't usurp his own popularity.
Executive producer Marsha Bickner (Christine Baranski), however, is
thrilled with Jim's arrival because she finally has an ally on her team,
and she'll do whatever it takes to ensure that the network doesn't sway
him to its side.
Jim's just trying to adjust to big-city life and keep harried New Yorkers
informed as best he can about their daily weather conditions. Maybe
they just don't understand Jim's simple Midwestern sensibilities. Or
maybe he has a lot to learn about life in the big city. Who knows?
And, incidentally, not only is actress Christine Baranski playing a
TV show executive producer in Welcome to New York. With this new show,
she actually becomes one. Explaining why she’s producing this upcoming
CBS sitcom, Baranski said, "It’s not because I want to fire people and
get bottled water handed to me all the time. It’s because I want to
collaborate and be part of the quality of the show."
The actress made a point of saying that she wants her portrayal to
be lifelike. "The last thing I’d want to do is play the cliché of the
fast and harried executive producer. I’ve already gone and sat in on
The Early Show and followed (its senior executive producer) Steve
Friedman around. And people are very calm. People know what they’re
doing; they don’t run around hysterical. Everybody’s terribly focused.
The energy is very fast and very focused."
