Synopsis: Aside from a love for hoops, it seemed that Lucas (Chad Michael Murray, "Cinderella Story," "House of Wax") and Nathan (James Lafferty, "Emeril") were two young men with little in common, but they were bound by the fact that they share the same father.

Nathan has gone through significant changes since he and Lucas first met. The star of the high school basketball team, Nathan hails from a wealthy family, while his half-brother Lucas is the only child of a single working mom. He is also a legendary basketball player in his own right. After growing up on opposite sides of the tracks in the same small town of Tree Hill, North Carolina, the two boys' lives suddenly collided when a twist of fate put Lucas on Nathan's high school basketball team and the half-brothers competed, not only for control of the court, but also for the heart of Nathan's then-girlfriend Peyton Sawyer (Hilarie Burton, "MTV's TRL").

Lucas' transition into Nathan's world created an instant love triangle. Although she was Nathan's girlfriend at the time, Peyton felt an instant connection to Lucas. Complicating things even more, Peyton's feisty best friend, Brooke Davis (Sophia Bush, "Van Wilder"), quickly set her sights on Lucas, adding to Peyton's confusion over her own growing feelings for him. It didn't take Nathan long to notice Lucas' best friend, Haley (Bethany Joy Lenz, "Guiding Light"), an unusual and intriguing girl who helped Nathan deal with his family issues and become a kinder person in the process.

While the teenagers struggled to find their places in the world, the adults in Tree Hill were left to deal with the residue of decisions they made years ago. Nathan's father Dan (Paul Johansson, "John Q") and Lucas' mother Karen (Moira Kelly, "The West Wing") were high school sweethearts. When Karen became pregnant during their senior year, she was devastated by Dan's decision to put his own life and career first. He went off to college on a basketball scholarship, leaving Karen behind to raise their son Lucas alone. When Dan's dream of a basketball career didn't work out, he returned to town with Deb (Barbara Alyn Woods, "Striptease"), the wife he met in college, and his new son, Nathan. Although he became a wealthy businessman and one of the biggest fish in the small pond of Tree Hill, Dan's marriage to Deb slowly fell apart, and he lived his basketball dreams through Nathan.

Dan's actions have had a ripple effect on many people in the town. While Karen struggled to raise Lucas without a father, she remained friends with Dan's older brother Keith (Craig Sheffer, "A River Runs Through It"). Keith is Lucas' biological uncle and served as his surrogate father over the years. His connection to Lucas is complicated by his attraction to Karen, and he is haunted by the possibility that he and Karen might have ended up together - and the hope that they still could. Karen's entire adult life has been focused on her son, but now that he's taking his first steps into a new world, she knows she can't protect him anymore and must start leading her own life.

Lucas and Nathan's rivalry on and off the court even brought back old emotions for the grizzled basketball coach, Whitey Durham (Barry Corbin, "Northern Exposure"). Whitey coached Nathan's father, Dan, when he was the school's star player, and now he is coaching both of Dan's sons.

When season one ended, Tree Hill was in turmoil. Lucas left town with his Uncle Keith to start a new life. Nathan and Haley solidified their relationship by getting married. Peyton and Brooke found their way back to being best friends after a series of bitter betrayals. Prior to signing his divorce papers from Deb, Dan suffered a massive heart attack.

Season two begins the day after the previous season ended. School is still in session, but the basketball season is over, so the boys find themselves drawn more and more to the river court. Nathan is increasingly brought into the world Lucas knew before he joined the high school team. For the first time, the two boys are acting like brothers, not enemies.

The girls of Tree Hill begin to explore their own interests beyond boys and romantic entanglements. Peyton's love for music and art leads her to a hip and challenging club venture, which may turn into more than she can handle. Brooke, ever the provocateur, finds that she has some new competition at Tree Hill High - competition she might just take lying down. Just when Haley thinks she's found everything she ever wanted with Nathan, a door involving her musical ability is opened, one that will challenge all she thought she knew about herself.

The web grows all the more tangled as new characters come to town and unexpected relationships for both teens and adults emerge. With her son growing more independent, Karen explores the professional and personal opportunities that were denied to her as a teenage mother. Keith comes out of the shadow of his older brother to find unexpected success. Deb struggles to define herself without Dan, while Dan's legacy continues to resonate in the lives of his two sons.

Years in the making, a deep and bitter conflict slowly unfolded as the two boys struggled to come to terms with a father who chose to live vicariously through one son, while ignoring the existence of the other. Now Nathan and Lucas have formed an unusual bond based on a mutual resentment of their father.
