Guide: Leaving L.A.
Synopsis:
"Why is everyone so afraid of death? . . . Life is just an intermission
to get us ready for the real adventure." -- ("Tiffany," lab technician,
Los Angeles County Coroner's Office)
Suicides,
murders and other unexplained deaths can be mysterious ways to "leave
Los Angeles," but the dedicated investigators of the Los Angeles
County Coroner's office are there to uncover the truth. Like the
masters of a gigantic puzzle, these committed workers tirelessly
piece together the compelling stories of the dearly departed.
Conducting
endless rounds of interviews, constantly searching for the slightest
clue and, of course, performing autopsies are just some of the elements
in a hard, but ordinary, day's work, in the offbeat new mid-season
drama series, "Leaving L.A.," premiering Saturday, April 12th (9:00-10:00
p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.
One
would think that those who "look death in the eye" every day would
have a somewhat grim view of life -- but the opposite is true. Whether
they get psychic feedback from handling someone's personal effects
or become engrossed in discussion with a corpse, their sympathetic
encounters with the processes of mortality enable them to not only
find humor in their jobs but also to appreciate the joy of everyday
living. After all, death is just a stepping stone to "Leaving L.A."
. . .
Acting
as tour guides for the deceased are an eclectic group of people:
Reed, an investigator whose humor and love for life bring much-needed
relief to his co-workers; Libby, the beautiful and intense new investigator,
who is desperately trying to adapt to her new environment after
recently being dismissed from the LAPD; Dr. Claudia Chan, a brilliant
medical examiner in the grip of a mid-life crisis; Tiffany, a spiritual
lab technician, who lovingly escorts the deceased into the afterlife;
Manny, a bizarre, yet lovable, lab technician who fancies himself
a ladies' man when in reality he is quite the opposite; Dudley,
the coroner's hip photographer who aspires to a career in fashion
photography; Martha, a self-proclaimed psychic whose predictions
about the dead, as well as the living, are eerily accurate; and
Dr. Neil Bernstein, the eccentric and egotistical Chief Coroner
of Los Angeles.
