Synopsis: For ten years, Stan Hooper (Norm Macdonald) has been
closing each episode of America's favorite newsmagazine, "Newsline,"
with his commentary, A Minute With Stan Hooper. Stan's "minute"
presents real stories about real people from middle America ... from
a midtown Manhattan studio.
Looking to deliver a more honest "minute," and to live in the vanishing
America he has commented on for a decade, Stan moves with his wife Molly
(Penelope Ann Miller) to Waterford Falls, Wisconsin, a small town they
passed through on their honeymoon 15 years ago that embodies the old-fashioned
values and idyllic lifestyle he has been championing.
When Stan and Molly leave the big city and arrive in this "average
small town," they realize that Waterford Falls is anything but
average. Their rented house includes a butler, Gary (Brian Howe), who
insists on afternoon tea and folding the Hoopers’ underwear. And the
local cheese mogul, Fred (Fred Willard), who always has string cheese
handy in a leather cigar case, isn’t happy that his son Ryan (Eric Lively)
is forsaking the family cheese empire for a career in entertainment.
As a result, Ryan, who dates the local waitress Chelsea (Reagan Dale
Neis) moves in with Stan and Molly "temporarily."
The central meeting place in Waterford Falls, Petersen Boys’ Diner,
which also happens to be the post office, gas station, souvenir shop,
the place to buy videos, and of course, the place you can buy cheese
-- by the slice, wedge, sculpture, block or barrel -- is owned by Lou
(Garret Dillahunt) and Pete Peterson (Daniel Roebuck), who are also
not quite what they appear to be. Stan Hooper is a commentator on life,
whose observations and insights will solve problems while creating others.
