Synopsis: NBC presents an "edge-of-your-seat"
update of the classic disaster film "The Poseidon Adventure" that brings
the hair-raising survival story into the 21st century. With an all-star
cast including Steve Guttenberg ("Three Men and a Baby," "Cocoon"), Emmy
and Golden Globe nominee Bryan Brown ("The Thorn Birds"), Golden Globe
winner Rutger Hauer ("Batman Begins," "Salem's Lot"), Peter Weller ("Mighty
Aphrodite," "RoboCop"), C. Thomas Howell ("Gods and Generals," "Hidalgo"),
Adam Baldwin ("The Patriot," "Full Metal Jacket"), Alex Kingston ("ER"),
Alexa Hamilton ("Santa Barbara") and Sylvia Syms ("What a Girl Wants"),
this three-hour movie event is a clever mix of breathtaking special effects,
heart-pounding human drama and alarming suspense.
As the majestic S.S. Poseidon departs from Athens on a month-long cruise,
among the 2,500 passengers is Mike Rogo (Baldwin), undercover agent for
Homeland Security. Among the crew of 1,200 is Kasim Badawi (Peter Butler),
a terrorist conspiring to send an explosive message to the world. Acting
on word of the impending danger, Captain Paul Gallico (Weller) pushes
the ship at full speed toward the nearest port, slicing through the churning
waters of an escalating storm and directly into unavoidable catastrophe.
While the passengers celebrate the New Year, the bomb explodes, leaving
the shredded hull vulnerable as the roiling seas pour into the wounded
Poseidon. The 136,000-ton ocean liner capsizes, leaving a chosen few trapped
underwater and terrified for their lives. The disparate survivors make
their way up -- to the bottom of the ship. They include: Richard Clark
(Guttenberg), a husband and father torn between a mistress he must save
and the family he can't live without; his successful, level-headed wife,
Rachel (Hamilton) and their two children; European pop star Aimee Anderson
(Tinarie Van Wyk, "Backstage"), embarking on an American career and a
new Hollywood marriage to reality television producer Jeffrey Eric Anderson
(Brown) who is a brazen opportunist; Bishop Schmit (Hauer), struggling
with his own personal crisis of faith; Dr. Ballard (Howell), the ship's
doctor; Belle Rosen (Syms), a widow enduring in the name of her beloved
late husband, and Rogo and his reviled prisoner Badawi, handcuffed together
in a personal battle of justice, sacrifice, and revenge.
As the inverted Poseidon sinks deeper and deeper into darkness, this group
struggles to stay alive while British intelligence agent Suzanne Harrison
(Kingston) works frantically against the clock in order to rescue the
survivors before it's too late. From this nightmare emerges a drama of
life-and-death emotions and the unyielding strength of the human will
to survive against all odds.
