Comcast Expands 'Internet Essentials' Program In DC

Cable giant Comcast said it has expanded a two-year-old program in the DC area that provides low-cost broadband service to needy families. Nationwide, the program offers low-cost basic Internet access to households that haven't had a Comcast account in the previous 90 days and meet certain guidelines, typically eligibility for one of several federal assistance programs such as free school lunches. It also offers families the opportunity to purchase a low-cost internet-ready laptop at a discounted price.
New to the company's "Internet Essentials" program is a partnership with the DC Promise Neighborhood Initiative (DCPNI) aimed at increasing digital literacy and connecting more families to the Internet in the Kenilworth-Parkside neighborhood.
As part of the partnership, 300 families with children who attend Neval Thomas Elementary School, the Parkside Campus of Cesar Chavez Public Charter Schools for Public Policy and Educare of DC will receive free computers upon enrollment in the program.
