Betty White's Twitter Account Is Real...Sort Of
When I received an email yesterday touting the fact that Betty White had joined Twitter, I didn't write about it for two reasons.
The first is that it's not real news when some celeb gets a Twitter account. It's roughly similar to promoting the fact they bought a new car or set of golf clubs.
The second reason is that in most cases, these celeb Twitter accounts are actually being written by some publicist or worker drone in their manager's office.
That certainly seemed to be the case with White's account. Aside from the fact that there were only three tweets and two of them mentioned her NBC show, I also noticed that the only accounts being followed that weren't other celebs or well-known news sites belonged to the same PR firm that pitched her Twitter account.
Today Valerie Bertinelli made the situation even more confusing by tweeting this series of comments about the Betty White account:
Just spoke with Betty and she is VERY upset! @BettyMWhite is NOT her. Don't know how they got verified, but it is not Betty. Please RT!
Stop the presses! Betty just got a call. An account was opened on her behalf by her people. More to come...
It's all a misunderstanding...@BettyMWhite IS Betty's twitter account! Now follow me back, bitch! ;-)
I think @BettyMWhite pranked me but good! #blushing
So all we know for sure is that Betty White isn't actually tweeting and there still isn't anything here to report other than a bunch of clumsy efforts to generate some online buzz.
Although they did get me to write about her account, so I suppose I am dumber than I look.
