J.J. Abrams: ‘We Didn’t Leak ‘Fringe’ Pilot’

Posted in Fox at 6:31 pm by Rick Ellis

Fox’s new drama “Fringe” is one of the most-anticipated new Fall TV shows. In part because of its plot, which is a mix of “The X-Files,” “Lost” and a number of other conspiracy shows. And in part because of the people behind it, which includes famed writer/director J.J. Abrams.

An early version of the pilot leaked online in June, a move which didn’t make the show’s staff happy. Since they contended the leaked version was incomplete.

The official version of the pilot hit my desk today, and it was accompanied by a note from the show’s producers: J.J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci.

Here’s the letter in its entirety, which is both funny and at least a partial explanation of the series.

“Dear Attractive, Intelligent, Funny TV Journalist,

We’re so thrilled that you liked the pilot of FRINGE, which you more than likely downloaded illegally. In all seriousness, we definately did NOT leak the pilot, nor did we want it leaked, but here’s the final version. If you watched the leaked version, you can spot the changes!

FRINGE, which premieres Tuesday, September 9th on Fox, exists in a world where science makes anything you can imagine possible and then some. In creating this show, we thought about all the TV we loved growing up, and decided to make something we would want to see as fans. The good and bad news is we’re fans of everything: action, mystery, romance, comedy and of course, science.

While FRINGE is a procedural, we wanted to add what many procedurals lack: character. And we wanted to dream up three characters who couldn’t be more different, and then hand them insane problems to solve.

We’re very excited about how it turned out, and think you’ll like this final cut as much as the leaked version–hopefully even more.”

The pilot episode was part of a very cool “Fringe” press kit, which included a poster, a t-shirt, a “Fringe” bag, a file folder with some hints on the backstory and a digital voice recorder with confidential case files from “Homeland Security Agent Phillip Broyles.”

Apparently, People Were Interested In ‘The Next Food Network Star’

Posted in From The Editors at 2:55 pm by Rick Ellis

I wrote two pieces over the weekend about the finale of the Food Network’s ‘Next Food Network Star,” and they both generated a lot of traffic for us.

They also generated a lot of interest through our association with Blogburst. My review of the finale was picked up by Reuters:

Trying Slanty….Part Deux

Posted in Uncategorized at 11:32 pm by Rick Ellis

When my former employer Internet Broadcasting quietly launched their Slantly platform into Beta a few months ago, I experimented with using it here at AllYourTV.com. While I liked the overall idea of Slantly, there were a few usability issues that I worried about. One concern was that there weren’t as many ways to customize their widgets as I would have liked.

I ultimately pulled Slantly and when I left Internet Broadcasting, let’s just say that I felt as if I needed a bit of psychic distance from the company and its products.

But someone back at world headquarters suggested that I give Slantly another shot, especially their distributed commenting system.

So I’m rolling out Slantly on some of the AllYourTV web site, and we’ll see how it works for us this time around. I certainly am open to a new commenting system, since the current setup is the ultimate in barebones.

Oh Great….NOW They Tell Us….

EWeek’s John Hazard warns that if you are dreaming of being your own boss, you should probably keep it between the sheets. Tight credit and high inflation make it a poor time to leave your employer to start up your own shop.

The startup rate among unemployed managers and executives fell to 4.3 percent in the second quarter, compared to 7.2 percent in the first quarter. Last year, 6 percent of job seekers abandoned the traditional job market for entrepreneurship in the second quarter, according to Challenger report… The second quarter figure was the lowest since the fourth quarter of 2000, when only 3.5 percent of job seekers started their own firms.

Ah….The Sweet Joy Of Broadband Access

Posted in From The Editors at 12:24 am by Rick Ellis

Those of us laboring away here at AllYourTV’s world office complex labored without high-speed Internet access for three days. It’s amazing the problems one construction worker can cuse with a slight snip of the wires.

One Of The Reasons We Love Minnesota

Posted in From The Editors at 4:18 pm by Rick Ellis

The Minnesota State Fair is a huge event, especially if you love fried foods on a stick.

Chowhound has a preliminary rundown of the foods that will be available, and it’s a lovely artery-clogging colection of old favorites and new choices.

Among the new treats: a foot-long pizza on a stick — and the “walking taco,” taco meat, cheese salsa and sour cream served in a Dorito bag of tortilla chips.

The Risks Of Going It Alone

Posted in From The Editors at 5:47 pm by Rick Ellis

I like the idea of running my own site, of controlling my own destiny. I enjoy the fact that if I see a piece of software I want to roll out, I can do it at my own pace, without working the request through a maze of corporate bosses.

And yet, doing it on your own has its risks. Your site is much more exposed than if it were part of a larger whole. You worry more about traffic spikes, more about technology problems. And if you’re not careful, those challenges can severely impact your web site and your business.

I’ve had one of those challenges this week, and it’s instructive to note how a small problem can have a huge impact on the bottom line.

The Downside Of Weekends

Posted in CW, From The Editors at 2:48 am by Rick Ellis

We moved our offices this past week, and with all of the confusion, I’m waaaay on reviewing things. I generally try and knock out stuff within a couple of days of receiving a screener, but I find myself looking at watching eight or nine things in the next 24 hours.

Yikes….First up…the new CW reality series “Farmer Wants A Wife.’
