Bio: From commercials, to primetime
shows, to feature films, BIG! host Frank Payne has been making his big
mark in the industry for years. From the Windy City, the first of four
sons to Irish immigrant parents, Frank grew up with a serious work ethic,
which served him well as he spent years working as a high-school wrestling
coach, a journeyman iron worker and owning and running a nightclub. Enough
jobs for three people, but luckily there's plenty of him to go around.
After being hit by a car one day, doctors told Payne he might lose his
leg. While it wasn't a "go to the light" experience, it did end up being
a "go to the spotlight" experience because Payne realized what he wanted
to do more than anything - more than listen to techno at 3:00 AM, more
than pin high-school students to a gym floor and more than bend iron with
his bare hands - was to make people laugh.
He began working at the famed Second City and soon started picking up
commercial work for companies such as Tombstone Pizza and the internet
company, @Home. Payne learned many things from these experiences, the
most important of which is that being paid in pizza is not as good an
idea as it first seems, and working for @Home doesn't mean you get paid
to stay at home all day.
In time, he opened his own theatre and formed his own comedy team, and
then moved to Los Angeles in search of jobs that actually pay money.
Unlike so many others, Payne found them, and began working on My Wife
and Kids, Providence, The Man Show, The Tonight Show, Garfield: The Movie
(Don't roll your eyes, it was that or Family Circle: The Movie), The Amanda
Show, JackPot, MTV's Club Dead and many other things you won't have heard
of either.
It was during one of these gigs, the Discovery Channel producers learned
of his big talent and got the "big" idea to have him host their new series.BIG!
