Biography:
James Cromwell was nominated for an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor for
his memorable performance as Farmer Hoggett in "Babe." His recent motion
picture credits include "Space Cowboys," "The Green Mile," "The General's
Daughter," "Snow Falling on Cedars" and "The Bachelor." He will soon
be seen in "The Sum of All Fears," the fourth film to be adapted from
Tom Clancy's best sellers featuring his famous protagonist, CIA analyst
Jack Ryan.
Cromwell also starred in "The Education of Little Tree"
and "L.A. Confidential." Among his many other feature film credits are
"Star Trek: First Contact," "The People vs. Larry Flynt" and "Babe:
Pig in the City."
His body of work encompasses dozens of television movies
and mini-series as well as roles on such series as "Picket Fences,"
on the CBS Television Network, "ER," "Home Improvement," "L.A. Law"
and "Star Trek: The Next Generation." He recently portrayed William
Randolph Hearst in the cable movie "RKO 281" and starred in "A Slight
Case of Murder."
His stage work includes regional productions of "Hamlet,"
"The Iceman Cometh," "All's Well That Ends Well," Beckett" and "Othello."
He recently played A. E. Housman in the American premiere of Tom Stoppard's
"The Invention of Love" at A.C.T. in San Francisco.
He was born in Los Angeles and grew up in New York City
and Waterford, Conn. He studied acting at Carnegie Mellon University
(then Carnegie Tech). His father, John Cromwell, the acclaimed actor
and director, was the first president of the Screen Directors Guild.
His mother, Kay Johnson, was a stage and film actress.
Cromwell and his wife, actress-director Julie Cobb, daughter
of the late Lee J. Cobb, live in Los Angeles. Cromwell's birth date
is Jan. 27.
