The Nominating Committee granted a Tony Award to Blast! (Cook Group
Incorporated and Star of Indiana, producers).
Special Tony
Award
A Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre was
given to musical director Paul Gemignani.
Regional
Theatre Tony Award
Based on a recommendation by the American Theatre Critics Association,
a Tony Award for regional theatre was given to Victory Gardens Theater
of Chicago, Illinois. This award is given to a regional theatre
company that has displayed a continuous level of artistic achievement
contributing to the growth of theatre nationally. A $25,000 grant
will be made by Clairol's Nice'n Easy to the not-for-profit Victory
Gardens Theater, which was founded in 1974.
Tony Honors
for Excellence in the Theatre
Tony Honors for excellence in theatre were given to Betty Corwin
and the Theatre on Film and Tape Archive at the New York Public
Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center, the playwright
workshop New Dramatists, and Theatre World, the annual statistics
and photography book which has been published since 1945.
