Annual People's Choice Award Winners
Written
By Rick Ellis, January 8th, 2000
The thing
about the People's Choice Awards is that they're always a bit
silly. Sure, the awards are given based on the results of polling,
but all that does is ensure nominations and winners who tend to
be popular-instead of those who are actually doing the best work.
In the end, all the People's Choice Awards prove is that the average
American is as screwed up as the average critic.
This time
around, the perplexing choice of the night was in the category
of "best performance in a new tv series," which was
won by John Goodman. His new show, Normal, Ohio has already been
canceled, which either means the public knows more than Fox (the
network that canceled it), or people just like Goodman so much
they're willing to ignore the sub-par show.
In the category
of "most predictable win," we have E.R., which won best
television drama for the eight consecutive year.
The awards
also included three categories that were determined by Internet
voting. Those categories included New Television Comedy Series,
New Television Dramatic Series and Reality-Based Television Program.
Nominees
and winners were selected by a Gallup Organization poll. Organizers
of the ceremony did not specify how many people were polled.
