72nd Annual Academy Award Winners

Written By Rick Ellis, March 27th, 2000

By any estimation, this was a looooong show. Billy Crystal returned as host, and opened the show with a funny bit in which he was digitally inserted into a number of scenes from famous movies starring everyone from Charlie Chaplin to Marlon Brando. He followed it with his now-customary musical salute to the films nominated for Best Picture.

While it was great to see that stuff, it meant that we were almost 30 minutes into the show before anyone won an award. Not a good sign--particularly if you live on the East coast.

They did drop the musical productions for best song, but turned around and added what seemed to be fifty "tributes," each utilizing minute after minute of footage, cut from hundreds of films.

In the end, I loved Crystal as always, although the best line of the night may go to Meredith Viera who hosted the preshow. As she ran into the auditorium just before showtime, she glanced over to see a group of people smoking cigarettes outside the entrance. "There's cast members from 'The Insider' smoking....'Hey, didn't you guys learn anything from the movie?"
