31ST ANNUAL CMA AWARD
NOMINATIONS-1997

Written By Rick Ellis

George Strait and newcomer Deanna Carter are
the top nominees for the 31st Annual Country
MusicAssociation Awards.

Strait and Carter both recieved five nominations, and the Tim McGraw/Faith Hill duet "It's Your
Love", recieved three nominations, as did the Pam Tillis ballad "All The Good Ones Are Gone."
These five nods gave Strait 42 nominations since 1981--second only to Merle Haggard's 43. On
the other hand, Kathy Mattea recieved two nominations this season, her first since 1991.
The nominees were selected by about 7,000 country music industry workers who are members of the CMA. They then vote for the winner from the finalists in each category. The winners will be announced on September 24th, with the program being broadcast on CBS.
There are two other major country music awards shows. The Academy of Country Music awards are an industry-voted show that airs in the spring and is produced by Dick Clark. After a number of years on NBC, it moves to CBS this year. The TNN Music City News Awards are chosen by the vote of fans and the show takes place during the summer and it airs on TNN.
