I recently spoke with Kim Myles, winner of "Design Star 2," in the lobby of a hotel just outside Minneapolis. She was in town for a personal appearance at the Mall of America, and, as she told me, it was her first time in Minnesota.

Myles has been busy since she won the title of "HGTV Design Star," and she's currently at work on her new HGTV show "Myles Of Style," which premieres in March.

Q: Has it finally sunk in that you've won and you now have a design show of your own?

A: Wow. Yes. No. Well (laughing). It depends on the day. It's been such an amazing experience, and even thought I knew what I was getting into, it's been so unexpected and so many surprising things have already happened to me.

Q: I wanted to talk first about what you were doing before you participated in "Design Star." As I understand it, you moved to New York to be an actress.

A: Yes, I did. I had taken acting lessons, had went to school and thought I was prepared for it. But New York is so competitive, and to be honest, at some point I realized I just wasn't good enough to compete. It was a hard thing to admit, but luckily, I found other things that satisfied me.

Q: Among other things, you were a hairdresser.

A: I was, and it was something I really loved. I love the people, I loved the experience. I would have been happy just doing that and pursuing other business ideas. I enjoy just interacting one-on-one with people, and I was able to do that every day.

Q: Did you ever dip your toe back into acting? Did you ever think about even doing it part-time?

A: No, once I gave it up, that was it. It wasn't one of those things that I had to do. I had decided it wasn't right for me, and that was that.

Q: So how did you go from that life to deciding that you wanted to participate in "Design Star?"

A: My husband and I had watched the first season, and maybe half way into the season, I started to think to myself that I wanted to try this. So when David (Bromstad) won the first season, I started visiting HGTV.com every day, waiting for them to post info about the next season.

When they did, we borrowed a video camera, and my husband was the cameraman for my audition video. We sent it in and then it seemed like a long time passed before we heard anything. But once I did hear from the show, it all moved pretty quickly.

Q: What did your husband think of the idea? It sounds like he was pretty supportive.

A: He was completely supportive. You have to understand that I've always done design things and decorating around our place. Every few months, I would move everything around, change the colors, try a new look. He was used to it, and I think that also made him more comfortable with the idea of me appearing on the show.

Q: At what in "Design Star" did you realize, 'Hey, I think I can win this thing!'

A: It's funny. I didn't really think about it until it got down to the final three. At that point, I looked around and thought that I might just be able to win.

Q: I knew you could win once I saw that final design of Todd's. Putting the living room in the dining room area just seemed to scream "Hey, don't pick me!"

A: (laughing). I hear that a lot. Todd is great, and that choice might not be the one I would make, but it was completely true to his own style. It was very much 'him' to make that decision.

Q: Now you're working on your own show, "Myles Of Style." What will the show look like?

A: I want to draw on my experiences trying to design my own personal home space. I think that one of the things that separated me from the other competitors is that I'm not a design professional. I've just always followed my own style, which I think is practical and luxurious and easy to implement. And that's what I think I can show viewers. How have the luxurious look, but how to do it on a small budget.
